The parental role of meeting your child’s learning needs is key in their positive development. At all ages it is easy for a parent to say: “There just isn’t enough time,” but being part of your child’s development is essential.
The author suggests to parents to make learning fun and when they are toddlers, to work on social/emotional/physical skills, self-esteem, communication and categorizing skills, self-esteem and basic concepts. Also, provide experiences that gives your child a frame of reference for future learning.
Proverbs 22.6 (NIV) says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is older he will not depart from it.” This verse is a perfect way to start the section on preschoolers. Here you start noticing your child’s traits, characteristics and behaviors. Everything the author mentions, most parents already know, but reminding us that WE are responsible to teach our child is his goal. Each chapter has Action Steps.
In each age group in addition to the intelligence, creativity and thought patterns of your child, it is important to work on your child’s spiritual and moral life. Proverbs tells us to use kind words, spoken in soft and gentle tone when speaking to our children—show unconditional love in motivating your child to change their behavior.
Every parent knows that when your child starts school, there are many outside influences. Here is where you teach them to be resourceful managing their time, their independence. You also start teaching them good money habits including sharing and being involved with helping others. With this newfound independence, you also lose control of what they eat, so it is time to teach good eating habits.
In this Junior and senior high period of your child’s life they may face failure-a learning experience you have to help them benefit from through faith in God’s help in this time of Goliath setbacks.
The author is a successful businessman who wanted to make changes in his community…and help people make positive changes to go from mediocrity to excellence. He writes from his heart as a father and now a grandfather.
