Imagine an adventure book that is part western, part time travel, part mystery, and part ghost story...that is Nick & Slim! Though Slim and his friends Christopher, Michael and Keenan are more angels on a mission than ghosts, they can do ghost-y things like teleporting and moving through solid objects.

Nick Stewart, age 11, has just moved to Colorado. His dad is an anthropologist who is very busy with a new job. Nick's mother, Laura, was recently killed in a hit-and-run accident by a drunk driver, and Nick is very alone. Nick is at a new school and the story begins when his class goes to a museum in a mining ghost town.

The class history assignment is to write a paper about a crime committed over a hundred years before, the murder of the owner of the Falcon Mine. The foreman of the mine, Slim Marano, had been hung for it on the basis of flimsy circumstantial evidence, but was he really guilty? Nick is finding some interesting information for his paper, and he is sure he can do a great job. As he is exploring the ghost town of Silverado, he is hearing odd whispers. He also finds he can get into locked offices, and these things scare him a bit.

Back in the museum he runs into the school bullies, and then discovers a broken display case, and realizes that an artifact has been stolen. The bullies confront him, knock him out, and plant on Nick, the artifact, Slim Marano's journal. Even Nick's busy and distant father is not sure he believes in his innocence. Now both Nick and Slim were accused of crimes they did not commit. Will they be able to clear their names?

Armchair Interviews says: The supernatural here is given a heavenly twist, as the angels enlist Nick's help. This book will be fun reading for both parents and middle-school age children. It would also make a good boys' book club choice.
